Fletcher's birth date is uncertain. His stone says 1890, but the county birth record indicates February 10, 1891.

He was the son of Isaac S. Ault (born Pendleton County, West Virginia) and and Sarah J. (Stump) Ault. The couple married on February 9, 1878, in Cumberland, Maryland. They received their license in Grant County, West Virginia. After August 1881, the couple moved to Delaware County, Indiana. It is unclear when Isaac died but Sarah married John Snider in Delaware County on September 18, 1895. Sarah had seven children, five of whom were still living in 1920. Fletcher's siblings included:

Roda (born ca 1878)
Clarence (born August 1881),
Frank (born February 26, 1884)
Emma C. (born September 19, 1886),
half-brother Roy N. Snider (born January 1898)
step-brother William H. Snider (born January 1887),

After Sarah died in 1927, Fletcher, blind possibly since birth, lived the rest of his life with his step father.
