John "Abe" Hunter lived in the Flat Lick area of Knox County, Kentucky, all of his life. His father, Abraham Hunter, was a son of Henry Hunter, Sr. and Barbara Bollinger Hunter from Speedwell, Claiborne County, Tennessee. (NOTE: According to some Hunter historians, his parents were Henry Hunter, Jr. and Sarah Davis Hunter who died soon after his birth. NO substantiating documents have been located.) Abe was raised by Abraham. When little Abe was 3 years old, Abraham Hunter (Henry's brother) married Selina Catlett; they had five children. (Although linked here as his mother, Selina was his stepmother.)
On 6 December 1877, John married Alice Rhodes and they had seven children including a child that died at birth. Alice died in 1891. He married Jane Powell on 18 Jan 1893; they had four children.
