In a 1930 U.S. census, Betty is listed as Bettie J. Westphal, adopted daughter of Herman C. and Jennie E. Westphal, living in Midway, Hot Spring, Arkansas. Betty was left in a box on the Westphal's doorstep and they adopted her. At some unknown time, they moved to Corpus Christi, Tx, where she lived until she died in 1963. Herman died in 1933 and Jennie died in 1948, leaving Betty with no family. At about 10 yrs old, Betty began to fall around and was diagnosed with infantile paralyses. Eventually she became an invalid and after her Mother's death, she entered the Nueces County Welfare System and was placed in Cuddihy Convalescent Home and later moved to The Hearth Nursing Home, where she lived until her death.
