O. J. Gingrich, founder of the Gingrich chain groceries, died in the Home hospital, Lafayette, this week, at the age of 63. He started his active career as a farmer in Carroll county, but quit that vocation to engage in merchandising at Archerville, a hamlet northeast of Lafayette. Later he owned stores in Colburn, Pyrmont and Buck Creek. Disposing of these, he opened a store in Lafayette, and added others until there are nine or ten stores in the chain, managed by the two sons. The old gentleman retired from business in 1929. It is not often that a farmer makes a success at merchandising, but Gingrich was an exception to the rule.
