Enlisted, November 7, 1912, in Troop E, 1st NY Cavalry Regiment ( Squadron A ), New York City. Served with Troop B, Squadron A Cavalry, on the Mexican border, June - Dec, 1916.
Commissioned , May 8, 1917, Captain, Cavalry, and reported to Fort Myer, VA. He resigned his commission as Captain Cavalry, by reason of physical disqualification, and accepted a commission as 2nd Lieutenant, Adjutant General, National Army. Assigned to Headquarters 29th Division, Anniston, Alabama. August 30, 1917 promoted to 1st Lieutenant. Attached to Military Intelligence Division, General Staff, Washington, DC, January 1918. Promoted to Captain, July 30, 1918.
Assigned to Headquarters A. E. F. , Vladivostok, Siberia, Russia, September 30, 1918. Assigned to intelligence duties and liaison with Japanese General Headquarters. Discharged from the service Feb. 27, 1919.
