Deputy Sheriff David Wargo succumbed to severe head injuries sustained nine years earlier when he was dragged by a vehicle in a supermarket parking lot at the intersection of 83rd Avenue and Camelback Road.

Deputy Wargo was working an off duty detail at the supermarket when he encountered a man parking in a prohibited area and instructed him to move. The subject attempted to flee the scene while Deputy Wargo held onto the truck. The driver reached speeds of up to 50 mph before Deputy Wargo fell from the truck and struck his head on the pavement.

He suffered severe head injuries as a result and was left in a vegetative state until passing away nine years later.

The driver of the vehicle was convicted of several charges after the initial incident and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Deputy Wargo is survived by his wife and two children.

Obituary

David Wargo 39, a Deputy Sheriff with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office passed away on Tuesday May 1st and into the waiting arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. David worked for the Sheriff's Office for seven years and was a member of the K-9 Unit and the SWAT Team. During his tenure with the Office he met his soon to be wife Lisa who was a Detention Officer, they fell in love and soon married. David was injured during a work detail and suffered a severe traumatic brain injury which left him incapacitated and in a wheel chair for the last nine years. David was cared for at home by his wife Lisa and his care giver Veronica Bojorquez who played an intricate part regarding his health care. Although unable to speak or walk David was involved in as many family activities as possible such as vacations to Disneyland, Knox Berry Farm, snow trips to Flagstaff, week vacations at the "Brown House" in Flagstaff, camping, beach trips in San Diego, dressing up for Halloween Parties and Fourth of July celebrations in Buena Park California with the Mercado family. David is survived by his wife Lisa, three boys who were the love of his life Noah 12, Nickolas 11, and Zachary 9, as well as his father David Wargo Sr., mother Mary Jane Cantrell, sister Amber Wargo, Grandmother Dorothy Hopkins, in-laws George and Evie Nunez, George (Delores) Nunez, and Maggie (Larry) Miller. David also leaves behind several Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Nephews, Nieces', friends, and the MCSO family of Officers who stood by his side from the beginning of this tragedy to the very end. The Wargo family would like to take this opportunity to thank Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the entire Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, Sharon Felix and The 100 Club, the Glendale Police Department, and the Phoenix Police Department for all of the support which was given to the family during their time of need. Without your help, David's life span would have been much shorter than the nine years he was blessed with, and allowed him to see his boys grow. Services will be held at the Vineyard Church of North Phoenix 6250 West Peoria Avenue Glendale, AZ on Tuesday May 8 at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted at Arizona Federal Credit Union in the David Wargo Memorial Fund #832472. May God bless and keep all of the men and women behind the badge safe day and night. Please visit www.shadowmountainmortuary.com to leave a message in the guestbook.
