William was one of ten children born to  William Burkhart & Anna Laundgraph. His father, William, was said to be one of the oldest and most respected citizens in the Austin (Chicago) area.  The family was well known throughout the area. They lived on a farm of 160 acres, later referred to as the "Burkhart Farm", until their home was destroyed by the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, when they moved to a property with half a block frontage on Superior Street in Austin. William appears in the 1880 census, living in his father's household in Cicero, Cook County, Illinois.
William married Louise Rathsack January 16, 1892, in Manitowac, Wisconsin. They had five sons, Charles Louis (married Pearl Metcalf), Leslie Herman (married Della O. "Vivie" Largent), Frederick Carl (married Ruby Metcalf, married Leslie Ora Thralls), Walter John(married Tip Atherton), Irwin Clyde (married Alice G. Lewis), and, 2 daughters, Elizabeth Lucille "Libby" (married Imer M. Tipps) & Esther M (married Fred Steinfelt).
At least one child, Charles, was born in Manitowac, Wisconsin; the youngest, Irwin, was born in Wheeler County, Texas; and the rest were born in Chicago, Illinois. He and his family appear in the 1910 Wheeler County Texas Census, the 1920 Hemphill County Texas Census, and the 1930 Los Angeles County, California Census, in Monrovia, where he lived until he passed away.
