Richard "Dick" Mitland, 78, died Sunday, March 7, 2004, at his home.
Funeral: 10 a.m. Thursday at Lucas Funeral Home, 1321 Precinct Line Road, Hurst. Burial: Noon in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, with military honors. Visitation: 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Dick retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1970, with more than 25 years of service, including service in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Since his retirement he had worked for the Fort Worth Police Department, where he made many life-long friends, and Mary Kay Company for 12 years in security. He was a member of the Air Force Security Police Association for 17 years, served as the national public affairs officer for five years, and was past president and charter member of the local Billie Renfro Chapter of that association. Dick was active in many public service and philanthropic organizations, including raising thousands upon thousands of dollars for the Big Brother and Big Sister organizations with the bowling for kids. He was instrumental in raising money for muscular dystrophy through the Jerry Lewis Telethon, and was dedicated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. His loving wife of 29 years, Betty Maitland, preceded him in death. Survivors: Daughters, Suzanne Saxe and her husband, Richard, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Jacqueline Miler and her husband, Fred, of North Richland Hills, Regina Redmon and her husband, Jimmy, of Fair Play, S.C.; son, Jimmy Maitland of Pittsburgh, Pa.; grandchildren, Lyndsay Maitland of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Timothy Miler of North Richland Hills; beloved friends, Phyllis Swentik, Donald Swentik, Judy Bennett and Bill Dexter.
