Austin Cosby was born into slavery around 1820 in Barren County, Kentucky. He was believed to have been auctioned off at the age of 5 for $500. He grew to be a strong and robust man being over 7ft tall and wearing a size 14 shoe. He was a slave of Rev. John Cooney Cosby and along with other slaves, Sonnie, Fount and Rueben, he helped build Friendship Church of which Rev. Cosby was the founder.
After he was freed, he along with many other slaves continued to worship at Friendship Church. He remained with the Cosbys and married twice. His first wife was Sarah and his second, Nancy.
Uncle Aus' lived to be about 103. He is buried in the Vontress Cemetery, but has no headstone. Many remember him as being a gentle giant. He is my 4th great Uncle.
