Mother of Fern Leona Holland. After going through a painful divorce with her husband, Mary moved from Bluejacket to Miami (both in Oklahoma), taking Fern and her older sister, Vi. Fern's brothers, Joe and James, stayed with her father, and her oldest sister, Mary Ann Dunn, was already out on her own. Sensing her mother's distress over the divorce, Fern came out of her own shell to help her any way she could. Fern felt compelled to protect her now single mother, which led to her developing ardor to fight for the rights of other people, particularly women. This led to Fern's decision to become a lawyer, believing that well-established laws could help any nation achieve rights that they did not already have. When her mother succumbed to emphysema, Fern felt compelled to leave her comfortable law firm to join the Peace Corps and do other work for people around the world, including the oppressed women of Iraq, for whom Fern would ultimately give her own life.
