Mary Jane was an orphan and was reared by a family by the name of Miller. Her mother died several weeks after Mary Jane's birth and her father, Abraham Lutz, died of the flux during the Civil War at Camp Sherman, Miss in 1863. This surname shows on various family documents although she never was legally adopted. In her obituary she shows surviving sisters Adeline Eckhart,Covington, West VA and Elizabeth Jackson, Buffalo, West VA and also that she was very active in the WCTU. She was preceded in death by her husband Jacob Nance in 1911 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. They were separated and she stayed in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan.
Mary is buried next to her daughter Violet May who may have died of Scarlet Fever, 8 yrs. of age in 1902.
