Donald "Tobe" Irving Boss, 81, met his Lord and Savior with his loving family by his side on Friday, May 4, 2012 at his home in Bennington, Kansas, following an extended battle with cancer.
He leaves his wife of 63 years, Donna Joann (Bradbury) Boss; his son, Kenneth Boss and his wife, Gaylene; his daughter, Linda Garst and her husband, Dale; his grandson, Kyle Garst and his wife, Julie; his granddaughter, Kindra Rose (Garst) and her husband, Mike; his granddaughter, Kelli Hamilton (Boss) and her husband, David; his granddaughter, Kaci Neely (Boss) and her husband, Jeremy; his granddaughter, Kimmi Smith (Boss) and her husband, Jesse; 10 great grandchildren; and many close friends.
The son of Glenn and Ruth (Heywood) Boss, he was born and raised on a dairy farm outside of Bennington. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Harley Ray Boss and Keith Leroy Boss, and is survived by four other siblings and their spouses, Robert Dean and Edna (Nelson) Boss, Velda Ruth (Boss) and Wayne Baugh, Martha Mae (Boss) and Cloyd Fox, and Max Eugene and Annabelle (Quinn) Boss, and several nieces and nephews. He also was a lifelong resident of Ottawa County, living in Minneapolis and Bennington. During his early years, he would help take care of the dairy farm and delivered milk to residents in town.
In 1946, through a friendly dare with his high school pal at a school dance, he met his wife and loving companion, Donna Bradbury. Their romance quickly blossomed and they were married on May 16, 1948 at the Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis, Kansas. It is during this time that he also graduated from Bennington High School. Later that year, he began farming with Tom Bradbury, Donna's father, outside Minneapolis, and continued in this profession for several years.
After the great flood of 1951, Tobe went to work as a laborer in Salina, Kansas, where he learned and developed a love for the carpentry profession. After some time, he started his own carpentry business, where he constructed, repaired and remodeled homes and businesses and built cabinetry, serving clients in the local area. His son, Kenneth Boss, joined his business in 1974. Later, they went to work for Griffin Construction Company in Minneapolis, up until his retirement in 1996.
Tobe had a passion for big vegetable gardens and animals. While living on a farmstead, he was able to enjoy his livestock hobby and raising wonderful gardens. He enjoyed raising horses, cattle and goats, and especially loved the expectation of newborns in the spring. His grandkids have many fond memories of their times on the farm, riding horses and motorcycles, going fishing, and milking the goats.
As a loving son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, Tobe highly valued time that he was able to spend with his family and friends. He thought dearly of his siblings and loved to spend time with them discussing events that happened while growing up together. He also loved spending time with his kids, grandkids, and his great grandkids, as he watched them mature and develop. Tobe believed that love serves as the foundation for our future and helps hold families and friendships together.
Being a Christian man, Tobe was a longtime member of the Bennington Bible Church. He served as an elder for the Bennington Bible Church and Community Bible Church. His faith and love for the Lord greatly inspired his family, friends and acquaintances and it is this that he would most like to be remembered for.
Following upon his love for Christ, his family remembers him most as mentor and teacher of life. He was a gifted life tutor who seemed to have an uncanny ability to help guide without helping too much, ensuring that one could learn through example and experience. This quality, along with his spirit and character, endeared him to those closest to him.
Funeral services were privately held on Saturday, May 5th, at the Bennington Cemetery. A memorial service will be held on Saturday May 26th at 10:00 A.M. at the Bennington Bible Church, Bennington, Ks.
