RINGGOLD -- Rev. Charles Andrew Himes, 82, went to be with the Lord on Saturday morning March 2, 2002, from a local nursing home.

Rev. Himes was preceded in death by both parents, Nathan and Minnie Himes, and two brothers Walt and Bill Himes.

Rev. Himes graduated from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., in 1947, receiving a bachelor's degree in anthropology and earned a master's of theology from Covington Seminary in Rossville in 1997.

He was a devoted servant of the Lord, serving as a pastor in Kansas, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska and Georgia, as well as serving as an evangelist and Christian bookstore manager. His last full-time pastorate was Trinity Baptist Church in Rome, Ga., followed by an interim pastorate at Independent Baptist Church in Plainville, Ga.

At one time he was the director of the Franklin Road Baptist Bible Institute in Murfreesboro, Tenn., and later taught in Covington Seminary in Fort Oglethorpe. He was a lifelong lover and student of the word of God, having read it in its entirety over 100 times. Rev. Himes was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Chattanooga at the time of his death.

He left behind his beloved wife of 56 years, Mary Lloys Rice Himes; and five children and their families, Murray and Lloys Jean Himes Grace and daughter Amy of Cincinnati, Ohio, James and Faith Himes Lamb and children, Elizabeth, Stephen, John, Sarah, and Andrew of Chattanooga, Andrew Himes and Alix Wilber and daughter, Amber, of Seattle, Wash., John and Patty Himes and son, Paul of Hokkaido, Japan, and Robin and Joanna Himes Murphy and children, Virginia, Christopher, and John Andrew of Cincinnati, Ohio.

He also is survived by his much-loved sisters and brothers-in law, Dr. and Mrs. Walt Handford, Greenville, S.C., Mr. and Mrs. Don Sandberg of Rossville, Rev. and Mrs. Bill Rice of Ringgold, Ga., and Dr. and Mrs. Roger Martin of Rossville.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today, March 5, 2002, and beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, followed by the service in the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home at 10 a.m.

Interment will be at Bill Rice Ranch in Murfreesboro with a brief graveside service at 2:30 p.m. EST. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Charles Himes to the Joyful Christian Ministries, P.O. Box 90028, Chattanooga, TN 37412.
