About 8.15 p.m., Tuesday, 25 April 1972, Senior Constable Creber, 28, was on foot pursuing a burglary suspect across a reserve adjacent to Barkly Place Heidelberg. At this time another policeman, Sergeant John Raymond Matthews of Heidelberg West, mistook Creber for the offender. Matthews called on Creber to stop. Creber failed to respond so Matthews fired a warning shot which he intended to go over Creber's head. Instead the bullet struck Creber at the base of the skull and he died a short time later at the Austin Hospital.

The deeds of a former policeman who rescued three people in the ferocious 1969 Lara bushfires will be acknowledged at an open day on Sunday which commemorates the 40th anniversary of the blaze.
The late Senior Constable John Creber was off duty when he rescued three people from fires along the Princes Highway in Lara on January 9, 1969.
The devastating Lara bushfires killed 18 people, destroyed 43 homes, a bluestone church and a local primary school when it ravaged through the town.
Despite his heroic efforts, two of the people Sen Con Creber rescued died later in hospital.
Tragically, Senior Constable Creber was accidentally shot dead by a colleague while pursuing a suspected burglar in Heidelberg on 25 April, 1972; he was posthumously awarded a Victoria Police Star in 2006.
Sen Con Creber's son, Gregory, will attend the 40th anniversary open day in Lara on Sunday to honour his father.
