Robert is the first child born to John and Sarah Hanson. Siblings of Robert are: Margaret 1843, William 1847, James 1849, Eliza Jane 1854, Jesse 1856, Theodore/aka William Presleigh 1859-1931, and Julia Ann 1862-1923.
Robert enlisted in the Civil War on Sept 5, 1861, 23rd Pa V. Regiment Co.C. He served in this Regiment until its disbandment Sept 8, 1864.
At that time the men of this regiment were transferred to the 82nd Pa. and Robert is found in Co.F. He served until the end of the war and was mustered out on July 13,1865.
Robert's mother, Sarah Clendennen Hanson, remarried in Sept 1865 to John Feeny/Finley. A court record shows them being married and I have only death dates for John Finley but the will of Sarah Finley has been located.
Robert's father, John Hanson, was a Pvt. in the 61st Pa Infantry Co. F and was in the battle of Fair Oaks on May 31 and June 1st of 1862. He was severly wounded and died on June 8, 1862. Robert's regiment the 23rd also participated in the Fair Oaks battle and it is speculated and hoped that Robert was with his father when he died. There is a mention in pension papers that Robert was given information to take home with him on a furlough after John's death.
Robert did not live long after the close of the war [a mere 10 years.] His military records show that in 1863 he was sent to a hospital in Philadelphia and was presumed to have cancer. He was away from his regiment for over three months but did return to close out the war.
A veterans memorial gravestone was ordered for his grave but in 2012 it is known to be missing and though he is buried at North Bend the exact location is not known.
Any information about Robert E. Hanson, his parents, or siblings would be greatfully appreciated. I have found no indication he was married.
