VIOLA MAY TUM FARR, 89, widow of Gordon E. Farr, well-known resident of Ulster, Pa., died early Monday morning, April 24, 2006 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. Viola was born May 24, 1916, in Canandaigua, N.Y., the daughter of the late LeGrand Frost Tum and Inez Bessie Mandy Tum. As an infant, she moved with her family to Elmira, N.Y., where she spent her early years growing up and was a graduate of Southside High School. On June 18, 1939, Viola married Gordon E. Farr. Together, they established the Farr Funeral Home, in Ulster, faithfully serving area families for many years. In addition to her dedication to the funeral home, Viola also served as Ulster Township tax collector and as emergency dispatcher for the Ulster-Sheshequin Fire Department and Ambulance for many years. Following the death of her husband on Jan. 11, 1981, Viola continued the operation of the funeral service until her retirement in 1987, when the funeral home was transferred to James A. Bowen. Viola was a member of the Ulster United Methodist Church and, as she raised her family, served as a den mother, for the Ulster Cub Scouts. She was the first noble grand of the former Lady Sheshequin Rebekah Lodge, now known as the Wysox Rebekah Lodge. Viola was a past secretary-treasurer of the Tioga General Hospital Auxiliary and was a life member of the Ulster Sheshequin Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Tri-Township Ambulance Association. She was a member of the old Grove Nature Club, Ulster-Sheshequin Study Club and the Milan Grange. Viola possessed great love for her family and home and enjoyed family gatherings. She will be remembered by her family and friends for her kind and gracious manner, her love of cooking, baking, bird watching, flowers, her pet cats and working on puzzles. Surviving are her children, Joann Lee Tuttle and her husband, Donald Tuttle, of Ulster; Richard Harry Farr and his wife, Jeanette Farr, of Ulster; and Gordon Eugene Farr and his wife, Norrene Farr, of Sayre, Pa.; her grandchildren, Gregory Tuttle and his wife, Betsy Tuttle, of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; Julie Tuttle Eecker and her husband, David Eecker, of Ulster; David Tuttle and his wife, Kathy Tuttle, of Athens RR 2; Robin Farr VanNess and her husband, Pete VanNess, of Athens; Richard H. Farr and his wife, Lori Farr, of Dover, Pa.; Paula Farr Chapman and her husband, Tracy Chapman, of Ulster RR 2; Dale Farr and his wife, Jodi Farr, of North East, Pa.; and Bryan Farr of Sayre; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Milton and Merton Tum. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Bowen-Farr Funeral Home, 6 Gordon Farr Street, Ulster, Pa. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2006, at the funeral home with the Rev. Sandy Brant, pastor of the Ulster United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Ulster Cemetery, Ulster. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be directed to the Ulster-Sheshequin Fire Department, P.O. Box 199, Ulster, Pa. or to the Ulster First United Methodist Church, in care of Arthur Young, P.O. Box 131, Ulster, Pa. in Viola T. Farr's memory.
