George Marshall Wilcox (ASN-01286747) was the Captain of Co. E, 2nd BN. 381st INF Reg. 96th US Infantry Division. He led his troops in fierce fighting of Leyte and Okinawa. He saved his men by ordering smoke while being pinned down on Needle Rock on the Maeda Escarpment, a.k.a. “Hacksaw Ridge". It took his troop nine attempts over five days to conquer the area. He was wounded 15 June 1945 in Okinawa.
