Mr. Burke was born April 29, 1920 in Kincaid, the son of Michael and Ada Alice (Manuel) Burke. He married Norma Jean Stephenson on November 19, 1946 in Taylorville. She preceded him in death on May 29, 1989. Mr. Burke was a 1937 graduate of South Fork Community High School in Kincaid. He worked as a security guard at the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office in Springfield for 30 years, retiring in 1968. Mr. Burke also managed the Lake Club Tavern from 1968 to 1989. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II from 1942 to 1946. Mr. Burke was a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Kincaid, the Eagles and the American Legion.
Surviving are one daughter, Louise “Toni” Mahan of Taylorville; one son, Henry Burke of Michigan; three grandsons, Theodore Workman of Indiana, Matthew (wife, Deborah) Workman of Highland and William “DJ” Mahan Jr. of Taylorville; two great-granddaughters, Megan Workman and Allison Workman; one sister, Betty Borgognoni of Kincaid; one brother, Robert Burke of Joliet; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Margaret Freeman and Patricia Grace; five brothers, John Burke, Patrick Burke, Bernard Burke, James Burke and Joseph William Burke; and two half-brothers, James Burke and Michael Burke Sr.
Cremation rites were accorded, and burial was held in Oak Hill Cemetery. Shafer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
