[Obituary of Anne Poole run in the Brandon Sun Newspaper]

With sorrow, we announce the passing of Anne Poole (nee Gaber) on May 12th, 2011, at the age of 93 years. Anne, daughter of Alex and Agrapina (nee Burla), was born in 1917 in Lennard, MB. The fourth of ten children, Anne received her education in Lennard. She worked in Inglis, Binscarth and then Brandon, where she met Fred and they married in 1942. Anne travelled with Fred until he went overseas in 1943 to serve in World War II.

While in Winnipeg, she was employed by the T. Eaton Company, and in Kingston she became the first female shift foreman for the Coca-Cola Company. At her 90th birthday party she was recognized by the President of the Coca-Cola Company for her contribution during the war years. Anne and Fred resided in Binscarth where daughters Linda and Meryl were born, before the family moved in 1952 to Russell. Anne worked alongside her husband in Poole's Clothing Store, serving the public until Fred's untimely death in 1983. She resided in her home in Russell until 2006, when she moved to Brandon to take up residence with daughter Meryl and family.

Anne served as Treasurer for the Ladies Auxiliary Branch 159 for which she was awarded a life membership, and for many years, Anne volunteered for Meals on Wheels. Her hobbies and interests included gardening, berry picking, cooking, knitting, sewing, travelling and photography. She was also an avid writer, journaling her life story as well as that of Russell and surrounding area. In her youth, she enjoyed playing softball, curling and dancing. In1937, Anne and her partner were awarded first prize in the Best Waltzing Contest held at the Tennis Club Dance in Binscarth. She cherished this memory. Her competitive nature was evident while playing card games and bingo. Her sense of humour, her love of playing pranks on family and friends, and her opinions regarding current events could always put a smile on one's face. Her natural ability to nurture was evident as she assisted numerous family members when in need and was closely involved in her grandchildren's lives. Anne ensured the door to her home was always open and in this the family included many special friends. Her rescue dog Charlie was her inspiration until the end.

Anne was predeceased by parents Alex and Agrapina Gaber, husband Fred, sister Mabel Galatiuk, brothers Peter, Jim, George, John and Gerry Gaber, sister-in-law Florence Poole and other family members. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters Linda (Bill Archer) and Meryl (Ron Orth), grandchildren Jason, Hadley (Fiona), Rona-Lynn and Scott, and great grandchildren Gabriel, Alana and Keenan. She is also survived by her sisters Dora Storey, Maria Gaber and Margaret Threader (Bill). We will miss you. We give thanks for having you in our lives. Your spirit has left a lasting, indelible imprint.

Our families would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Brandon Regional Health Centre and Assiniboine Centre and the devoted staff from the BRHA Home Care for the care and support they provided over the years. We would also like to express our sincere appreciation, gratitude, and heartfelt thanks to our families, friends, and neighbors, for the many acts of kindness bestowed upon us for the visits, hugs, fruit and veggie trays, baking, flowers and donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of MB made in memory of our mom, grandmother, great grandmother Anne Poole. A service was held in the Russell Knox United Church on May 16th with Reverend Howell officiating. Thanks to everyone who traveled distances far and near to attend her funeral. Thanks to Braendle Bruce Funeral Home for so ably conducting her funeral arrangements.
