Robert C. "Bob" Allen, 71, of Epping NH, died Aug. 25, 2004, in Exeter Hospital. He was born Sept. 25, 1932, in Portsmouth NH, the son of Emily (Craig) Allen of Bar Harbor ME and the late Walter H. Allen. He was raised in Portsmouth, moving to Epping in 1971.

He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Allen was employed by Public Service Company of New Hampshire working at the Schiller Power Station, retiring in 1991 after 35 years of service. Following his retirement he worked part time on the Conway Scenic Railroad in North Conway for several years.

In his youth Bob enjoyed car racing and mountain climbing, hiking most of the Presidential Range of the White Mountains. He enjoyed softball, bowling, and coaching Portsmouth Little League. He was an avid rail fan, live steamer, and HO model railroader. His model railroad layout was recently photographed by Model Railroad Magazine. He belonged to several clubs, including the Boston and Maine Historical Society, the Northeast Live Steamers, the 470 Railroad Club, and Great Bay Model Railroad Club. He was considered a Boston and Maine Railroad historian and was sought after by many clubs and organizations to present slide shows of the Boston and Maine Railroad. He served on the Epping Budget Committee in the mid 1970s.

In addition to his mother, he leaves his wife of 49 years, Virginia "Ginny" (Gallagher) Allen of Epping; daughters Debra S. Allen of Portsmouth and Sheila Allen-Harris of Epping; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers Paul C. Allen of Sanford MI and Wayne D. Allen of Bartlett NH; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Epping Community Church, Pleasant Street, Epping. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with Rev. Wayne VanGundy officiating. Burial will follow at Prospect Cemetery in Epping.
