Karr worked as a house mover in Ann Arbor and moved many houses in the Ann Arbor area. He once moved a house with a team of horses on the ice across Horseshoe Lake North of Ann Arbor. He lost a son Elton E. Karr to a house moving accident when Elton was knocked off the house by a tree branch.

After he got out of the house moving business he later worked for the city of Ann Arbor for many years.
