Mr Matthews came from Germany at a very young age along with his parents, Frederick Ludwig Matthews and Catherine M. D. Hermerding. He was a pillar of the Methodist Church in Gretna, Louisiana and lived on Lafayette Street most of his life. His two sons Warren and Jeff were both grocers on that street. According to his obituary, he was instrumental in having the Methodist Church built with his name on the cornerstone. Two of his daughters married Methodist ministers. Most of his ten children either sang in the choir or played some musical instrument. I have been unable to locate the resting place of one of his children, Louisiana May Matthews Tobin who was married to Elzear Luigi Tobin. The Tobins last known address was 41 Summitt Rd, Wellesley, Norfolk, Massachusetts. I believe either May Tobin or daughter, Alicia May Downer, taught piano there.
