Hiland was living in Connecticut when the Civil War broke out in 1861 enlisting as a Private in the 14th Infantry Company F August 11, 1862 at seventeen years old. Company F was largely formed by men from the Hartford area. Wounded at Antietam the 14th fought in the battles at Chancellorsville, Bristow Station, Mine Run, Gettysburg, Stony Mountain, Mortons Ford, Fredericksburg, Hatchers Run, The Wilderness, Petersburg. After the war Hiland traveled around the country selling mortuary supplies.
