Eliza Grant was born December 13, 1830, in Udimore, Sussex, England to John Grant and Elizabeth Boots Grant. They resided in "Pound House" Udimore. At age 19, Eliza joined her parents and siblings immigrating to America arriving Port of NY aboard The Southampton May 1850.The Grants made their home in the 5th Ward,West Fayette St.,Syracuse, NY, where Eliza's father and brothers worked for the NY Central Railroad. Eliza met Fletcher Hope, an English emigrant from Checkendon, Oxfordshire, England, who was a butcher, grocer and later a painter also residing in the 5th Ward of Syracuse, N.Y.
Eliza and Fletcher married about 1851 and had seven children. At the age of 34, Eliza died of consumption leaving behind her parents, siblings, husband Fletcher and seven young children. Note:Eliza was originally buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Syracuse, and later removed to Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse.
