His first name has been identified multiple ways as Carey, Coney, Elcana, and Ellenahah.

Elcanah's middle initial is "C." One of our family photos has his name written on the back (in cursive writing). The initial matches how a capital "C" would have been written in the 1800s. I checked it against a cursive writing primer from that time. On the marriage records for two of his sons, his name is shown as "E C Hyder.
