"Death of Thomas Perryman"

Thomas Perryman one of the pioneer residents of Anamosa died at Sioux Falls, South Dakota last Friday and his funeral took place at Sioux Falls on Monday. He was the oldest child of the late Patrick Perryman and Catherine Phalan Perryman and came with his parents to Richland Township, Jones County in 1849, from New Orleans. Both parents were born in Ireland. His father purchased a relinquishment from Horatio Sanford of a farm of 160 acres of land at $1.25 per acre. This farm was soon sold, being well known as part of the Cavanaugh farm now owned by Thomas McGovern. His parents purchased a farm in Cass Township in the fifties which still is owned by the Perryman family. When a young man he engaged in business as a salesman which occupation he followed for many years in this neighborhood as agent for a wholesale tea and coffee house. Later he removed to the west and about 20 years ago came back to Anamosa and accepted a position as an officer at the Reformatory. Mr. Perryman was twice married, his first wife, a daughter of the late Sam Chamberlain passing to the beyond many years ago. About twenty years ago he was married to Miss Agnes Welch of Chicago, who with two sons survives. A few years ago he removed to South Dakota and engaged in the Hotel business in Elkton and later moved to Sioux Falls. Mr. Perryman besides his wife and children leaves two sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Mary J. Foley, wife of Edward Foley of Anamosa; Mrs. Sarah Scott, wife of Frank Scott of this city and Michael, Edward and Henry Perryman of Chicago. Mr. and Mr. Foley and Mrs. Scott were present at the funeral. Mr. Perryman was a man highly respected in this city. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Father Coggon at St. Michael's Catholic Church at Sioux Falls and burial was in the Catholic Cemetery at Sioux Falls.
