Berthold Rudolph Mueller was born on June 20, 1850 in one of the principalities that is now part of present-day Germany. He apparently emigrated to the United States in 1869, but his passenger ship record has not yet been located. He eventually made his home in Detroit, Michigan - where he found work as a baker.

On October 23, 1872, he married another recent German immigrant named Maria (aka Mary) Engel. Unfortunately, Mary died less than 2.5 years later (February 10, 1875) due to complications from childbirth. She is buried in Woodmere Cemetery under the surname "Miller". About 6 weeks later, on March 21, 1875, Berthold married Mary's younger sister Louise Engel.

Although there were several children born to his 2 wives, sadly none of the children survived.

Over the years, Berthold worked various odd jobs - including laborer and carpenter. For a few years, he and Louise lived on 17th Street in Detroit, but for most of their lives they lived at 4326 Toledo Avenue (also in Detroit).

Berthold passed away in 1923 at the age of 73. Louise preceded him in death the prior year.
