Per her headstone: she was the wife of Dr. Augustus B. Knowlton

Per her death certificate found on Ancestry.com: she was a daughter of Henry Thompson Earle and Caroline Leaphart and the widow of A. B. Knowlton. She died at 1615 Hampton St., Columbia, SC of cancer of the bladder with metastasis and hemolysis. The informant was Miss Claudia Knowlton of Columbia, SC.

From http://www.palmettohealth.org/body.cfm?id=3193 (Palmetto Health, Baptist History): In the summer of 1914, the widow of Dr. Augustus B. Knowlton, a very respected physician, approached the South Carolina Baptist Convention about purchasing the small hospital her husband had established in downtown Columbia. Recognizing this as a chance to enter the healing ministry, the Baptists agreed. On September 1, 1914, they reopened the facility on Marion Street as South Carolina Baptist Hospital--two buildings that housed 70 beds and a school of nursing.

Found in The State 28 May 1938: Mrs. Claudia Earle Knowlton, widow of the distinguished surgeon, Dr. Augustus B. Knowlton, founder of the Knowlton hospital, now the South Carolina Baptist hospital, died at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon at her home, 1615 Hampton street, after an illness of over a year. Mrs. Knowlton was prominent in many activities, a leader in church and club work, a patron of the arts, a charming gentle woman, whose life was filled with gracious and worthwhile acts, and whose death is regretted deeply by a wide circle of friends. She was a past regent of the William Capers chapter of the D. A. R., past president of the Columbia Drama club, past president of the Daughters of the Holy Cross of Trinity church, and a member of the Columbia Art association and of the Evening Music club. She was a devoted communicant of Trinity Episcopal church. Mrs. Knowlton was the daughter of Caroline Leaphart and Henry Thompson Earle. She was born in Columbia and spent her entire life here. She was married to Doctor Knowton April 4, 1899, he having come to Columbia from Brooklyn, N. Y., in 1893. He preceded her to the grave in 1914. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Charles T. Lipscomb, Jr., of New York and Miss Claudia Knowlton of Columbia; one granddaughter, Caroline Knowlton Lipscomb; two sisters, Mrs. Robert Drayton Earle and Mrs. James Hagood Sams, both of Columbia, and several nieces and nephews. John J. Earle and Dr. Sumter Earle, brothers of Mrs. Knowlton, who preceded her to the grave some years ago, were both prominent for years in Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted at 5 o'clock this afternoon from the residence by Dr. Henry D. Phillips, rector of Trinity. Interment will be in Elmwood.
