ENID — Funeral for Walter L. "Huffy" Huffman, 87, will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at United Methodist Church, Laverne. Burial in Laverne Cemetery with Military graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post 273. Arrangements by Wilkinson Funeral Service, Buffalo.

Walter was born July 8, 1925, in Buffalo, Okla., to Jesse and Ollie Mae (Weese) Huffman and died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012.

He served in the Army during World War II. He was wounded in battle and honorably discharged on Feb. 14, 1946.

He married Faye Walters on February 1,1944. They had one daughter, Connie.

*Walt Huffman was a successful girls basketball coach for Laverne High School. Perhaps his best team was the 1964 squad that finished 26-2 and as Class A state runner-up. Huffman had three stars on that team — Lola Ham, who went on to play for the U.S. National Team; Glenda Rogers, an Amateur Athletic Union All-American for the Look Magazine-sponsored team; and three-year starting forward Jayne Jayroe, who went on to become Miss America. Huffman also taught history at Laverne High School before retiring from the Laverne School System.
