Dr. Kelly was the son of William and Margaret Kelly. He came to the United States with his family in 1870. In 1891 Michael married Mary Caroline "Carrie" Cantwell at St. Mary's Church in Fall River, Massachusetts. Carrie and Michael had three children: Christopher Cantwell Kelly, Mary Philomena Kelly Hart and Eva J. Kelly Betz. Dr. Kelly specialized in children's diseases as a physican and was a humanitarian in the community. He also wrote poetry for John Boyle O'Reilly's Boston Pilot.
