The 1870 census for Sabine Parish Louisianna lists Charles W. Gathings as being born in North Carolina, probably in Anson County. His parents were John W. Gathings b abt 1792 Anson, NC and Margery (Martha). In 1826-1827 his father moved their family to Henry County, Tennesse. About 10 years later his father moved their family to Decatur County, Tennessee. Prior to 1849 Charles moved to Marshall County, Mississippi. Here he marries Mary Ann Scoggins 17 Dec 1849, daughter of Richard and Margaret Scoggins also from Tennessee. Charles and Mary Ann have four children before moving to Sabine Parish Louisianna. The 1860 census for Sabine Parish Louisianna lists Charles and Mary Ann living next door to Mary Ann's parents Richard and Margaret Scoggins and Mary Ann's brother Columbus. Also, living in Sabine Parish LA (near Leesville, LA) is Mary Ann's brother Henry Scoggins and his wife Harriet.

The 1860 and 1870 census lists Charles as a farmer. Both Mary Ann's parents had died in 1863, and Charles died at some point after the 1870 census was taken and about 1876. James Gathings of Grapevine, Texas states that Mary Ann Gathings moved her children to Covington, Texas. A town founded by James Jackson Gathings a distant family relative. It is possible that, although James Jackson and Charles Gathings were distant relatives they probably knew each other very well as their families were both living in Mississippi at the same time prior to James Jackson moving to Texas and Charles moving to Louisianna. At sometime prior to 1885 Mary Ann Gathings and her children (some grown) move to Young County Texas and build a ranch house on Loving Highway, It is stated in other information that Charlie and John Gathings were still living in the Gathings Family ranch house on Loving Hwy in 1905. Mary Ann Gathings died of tuberculosis January 22, 1912 she is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Graham, Young County, Texas.

Buried in the Plunkaway Cemetery near Leesville Louisianna is two individuals identified by "Gathron" it is believed these two individuals are Charles W. Gathings and his son Henry.
