Born at Fort Laramie to Richard Brooke Garnett and Looking Woman/Looks at Him. Garnett was with his Indian wife (?) and son for a short time when he was reassigned to other posts prior to returning east at the outbreak of the Civil War. He would join the Confederate army and would die at Gettysburg in the legendary Pickett's Charge.

Once he left his son never saw him again, though he was aware of who his father was and of his death in the Civil War.

His mother had been with John Baptiste Boyer, who with another woman was the father of Mitch Boyer, who was the scout that was killed at the Battle of Little Big Horn. After Garnett left Boyer took her back, so though Mitch was a lot older than Billy, they were half-brothers. She later married a John Hunter, thus the reason that Billy sometimes went by the Hunter name.

Billy was a scout, guide and interpreter for the U. S. Army from about October 1876 until September 1877.

He had three wives:

#1 Zuzella Janis, who was the mother of his son Charles W. Garnett, They divorced.

#2 Emma Janis, who was the mother of his daughter Susan Garnett. They divorced.

#3 Filla Janis, who was the mother of his children, William Garnett Jr. and Dolly Garnett.

With the last name of Janis, it is apparent that his wives were related.

Supposed children:

Warren Brave Eagle
Charles married Alice Galligo
Susan
Richard married Emma Shermin/Sherman
Dollie married William M. Sherman
