Betty was one of the six children born to David W. Rogers and Jane Elizabeth Emerson. She was married twice, first to Sam Rice (1845-1870) who was killed in a cotton gin accident, and then to James H. Smith. She was the mother of nine children (1 by her first marriage, and 8 by her second), only four of whom lived to adulthood. She saw a great deal of trouble and grief in her adult life, but Betty was a loving and generous person with the grit to survive and thrive, even in the wilds of Texas during its pioneer days.
