Pooler/Brooklet-Mr. Dewey R. Whitaker, Sr., 87, passed away at his home on Friday, May 18, 2012. Mr. Dewey was born in Vidalia to the late Charlie Marcus Whitaker and Clora Ann Hall Whitaker. He was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Pooler and a current member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He retired from the GA Ports Authority and served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member and former Worshipful Master of the Richard T. Turner Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by two wives, Evelyn Lee Whitaker and Peggy B. Whitaker. Survivors include his former wife, Faye Calhoun Anderson; children, Dewey Ray Whitaker, Jr. (Faye L.), Mary A.W. Thompson, Brenda W. Helms (Jack S.) and Debra Woodcock (J. Alan); seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Funeral: 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of the funeral home with burial to follow at Gravel Hill Cemetery.
