Amos Ledford, 28, was another victim of the treacherous Nolichucky, at Devil's Looking Glass, when he was drowned Sunday morning, while wading.

Young Ledford, his wife and two children and Mr. and Mrs. Luke Tipton and a baby, were on an outing, having spent the night camping near the spot where the young man drowned. Young Ledford, who was not a good swimmer, had gone for a swim. At about 11, while wading around in shallow water, he stepped off into one of the deep holes, that are numerous in the river, he called for help and struggled desperately against the swift current. Tipton who could not swim, was not in the water at the time but they a rope to Ledford, who was too near gone to grasp it. Horrified, his family and friends say him sink. Arthur Burrell, who was at his summer camp nearby, was attracted by the screams but arrived to late to save Ledford, although the water was only 8 feet deep where he sank. Burrell helped recover the body.

Many have been victims of the swirling undercurrents at this spot in the river. Four young men were drowned there four years ago.

Young Ledford was a caretaken on Congressman John Q. Tilson's farm near Clearbranch, where both the Ledford and Tipton families resided.

Surviving are his wife, two children, Ephram, age 5 and Marie age 3; mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Ledford of Clearbranch, eight brothers and two sisters. *Source-The Erwin Record, 07 Sep 1932, Wed ·Page 1
