Jim was a hotshot smokejumper that was killed in the firestorm on Storm King Mountain on July 6, 1994. All together, there were 14 fatalities during that fire, most of them being the 9 from Prineville, Oregon, that got caught on a fireline after loosing radio communication with the ground and, realizing their situation, tried to escape by running to another ridge before the fire overwhelmed them. They were not successful.

He attended Pasadena College on a baseball scholarship and received his bachelor's degree in Spanish and history. While in Pasadena, Calif. he met Holly E Kliewer of Shatter, Calif. They were married in May 1973 at Bakersfield, Calif.
