J. T. Stephens, 82, of Monroe, died Thursday, June 10, 1999.

A native of Walton County, he was the son of the late James Thomas Stephens and Julie Baxter Stephens.

He was the retired owner of Stephens Grocery and was an agent for Southeastern Stages.

He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, a member of the American Legion and was a Mason.

Funeral services were held Sunday, June 13 at Harvest Baptist Church with Dr. Jim McFarlin and Jerry Melville officiating.

Interment was held in Hill Haven Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers were Courtney Chancey, Jimmy Malcom, Matthew Chancey, Jeff Gunter, Chad Gunter, Cale Gunter, and Maj. Ron Stephens.

He is survived by his wife, Gaynell Prickett Stephens; daughters, Gail and Neal Gunter and Jan Chancey; son, Ronnie Stephens; sisters, Velma Malcom and Lillian Herring, all of Monroe; brother, Lamar Stephens of Watkinsville; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Arthur Bowick Inc. Funeral Directors was in charge of the arrangements.
