Injuries Sustained at Mine #7 Cause Death

Charles V. Manuel, 64, of Kincaid died at 9 a.m. Sunday, February 17, 1946, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, from injuries sustained while working at the coal mine on February 12, 1946.

Mr. Manuel sustained a broken leg and was taken to St. John’s Hospital on Sunday, where physicians attempted to amputate the leg, but he died before the operation was performed.

Mr. Manuel was born February 14, 1882 in Silverdale, England, the son of Elijah and Elizabeth (Salt) Manuel. He married Myrtle E. (Hughes) James on August 15, 1914 in Keokuk, Iowa. Mr. Manuel immigrated to the United States in 1906. He worked as a mine examiner at Peabody Coal Mine #7 in Kincaid for 10 years. Mr. Manuel was a member of St. John the Baptist’s Church in Keele, England.

Surviving are his wife, Myrtle; one son, Carl (wife, Dorothy) Manuel of Taylorville; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Gwendolyn) Dooley of Taylorville and Mrs. Harry Sr. (Juanita) Tompkins of Farmington; two sisters, Mrs. John (Thirza May) Rodgerson and Mrs. Michael (Ada Alice) Burke, both of Kincaid; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Charline Manuel; one grandson, Francis Tompkins; and two brothers, James Manuel and Percy Manuel.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 19, 1946, at Shafer Funeral Home. Rev. J. W. Williams officiated, with burial following in Oak Hill Cemetery.

The flowers were carried by Mrs. Arthur Davidson, Mrs. George Hughes, Ms. Wanda Hughes, Mrs. Howard Howlett, Mrs. Pete Whitlock, Mrs. Wayne Baker, Mrs. Herbert Johnson, Mrs. Margaret Freeman, Mrs. Florence Burke, Mrs. Margaret Burke, Mrs. Mary Burke, Ms. Betty Burke, Ms. Betty Johnson and Mrs. William Meadows.

Pallbearers were John Burke, Patrick Burke, Charles Burke, James Hughes, Richard Johnson Jr., William Meadows and Pete Whitlock.
