SCARBOROUGH - Richard P. Seavey, 79, of the Payne Road in Scarborough and a longtime resident of South Portland, died Sunday, April 4, 2010, at the Maine Veterans' Home in Scarborough after a long illness.
Mr. Seavey was born in Portland, the son of Howard Clarence and Mattie Louise Leighton Seavey. He was educated in the South Portland Schools and graduated from South Portland High School in the Class of 1949 and was a member of the track team.
Dick was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church in South Portland and was a member of the Eskimo Men's Club. He worked for Cushman's Bakery, where he met his future wife, Marilyn and later was a Postal Clerk from 1968 to 1990 in Portland.
Mr. Seavey served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict on the U.S.S. Genesee in Japan. He was a 55 year member of the Masons, Hiram Lodge, 180 A& FM, and the American Legion Post 35 in South Portland. He was an avid fisherman and loved to fish summer and winter, play pool and work on crossword puzzles.
He was married to Marilyn L. Bustin on Sept. 18, 1954.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years of Scarborough; a son, Howard R. Seavey and his wife Jennifer of Topsham, three daughters, Pamela G. Schaffner of Mason, Ohio, Robyn C. Queen and her husband Thomas of Danielsville, Pa., and Laura E. Michlig and her husband Richard of Kansas City, Mo., a sister, Pauline L. Adams of Westbrook; six grandchildren, Nathaniel R. Schaffner of Lebanon, Ohio, Jason A. Michlig of Kansas City, Mo., Stephanie C. Schaffner of Mason, Ohio, Ryan T. Queen and Kerry J. Queen both of Danielsville, Pa., Daniel H. Seavey of Topsham; and nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 10-11 a.m. on Thursday, April 8, 2010, at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. There will be a reception at the Hospitality Center. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Brooklawn Memorial Park with Military Honors.
