John Leonard "Pepper" Martin, Sr., 78, resident of 1920 Cedar Springs South, husband of Georgia Whatley Martin, died September 19, 2010 at Abbeville Area Medical Center.

Born in Abbeville County, October 10, 1931, he was a son of the late Frank L. Martin Sr. and Myrtle Edwards Martin. He retired from the US Air Force with the rank of Master Sargent after serving 22 years and having served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Mr. Martin also retired as Lieutenant from the Abbeville County Sheriff?s Department.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a daughter, Susan and husband, Rev. Andy Bowers of Greenwood and a son, John L. Martin, Jr. of Abbeville; two sisters, Evelyn Page Ashley of Clinton and Betty M. Turner of Abbeville; a brother, Frank L. Jr. and wife Barbara Martin of Greenville; three grandchildren, Andrea and Caleb Bowers and Dakota Martin.

He was predeceased by twin sons and a brother, James W. and Jim Martin.

Funeral services with full military honors will be conducted at 2 PM Wednesday from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood with Rev. Andy Bowers and Rev. Thomas Cartledge officiating.

Private burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

The family is at the home of Andy and Susan Bowers, 207 Fawnbrook Dr. in Greenwood and will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.
