He was born in Statesboro in Bulloch County, Georgia, December 19, 1899, the eldest of six children. He was a graduate of the A & M School of Bulloch County which was the forerunner of Georgia Southern University. He also attended the University of Georgia. While at A & M, he was a boarding student, traveling home on weekends by horse and buggy. He ran track and started his first business there, a campus store operated out of his room.

He moved to Savannah in 1922 where he was employed by the Central of Georgia Railroad as a Master Blacksmith in the old Roundhouse and played trumpet in the Central of Georgia marching band. He was the founder and operator of the several "Red Rooster" beverage stores in Savannah and Hinesville in the 30's, 40's and 50's. He was an entrepreneur in various other small businesses while continuing to follow his trade as Blacksmith and Tool and Die Maker until his retirement in his late seventies.

After the death of his father in 1939, he purchased the Statesboro family farm from the Estate and more than doubled its size by purchasing adjacent farms. He operated and managed the land until the middle 50's when he sold the entire acreage to his brother. He lived in three centuries and witnessed many historical events, such as two Haley's Comets, The World's Fair, one of the Wright Brothers' flights and the TV Lunar Landing. On one occasion, he lectured at the Smithsonian Institute in the Aeronautical and Space Museum in Washington, DC.

He served in the 118th Field Artillery, Georgia National Guard. He was a past member of the Benevolent Order of the Elks, the Mystic Knights of the Sea and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he was a High Priest. There he served as Secretary of the Elders' Quorum for 20 years and Church Magazine Representative for 35 years.
