Albert Z. Downs was born at Woodbury, Connecticut, December 31, 1838. His parents relocated from Woodbury to Westville about 1855. During the Civil War Albert enlisted as a private on August 30, 1861, and was mustered into Company F, 6th Connecticut Infantry, on September 7th. He re-enlisted on December 24, 1863, and was mustered out at New Haven on August 21, 1865. His younger brother, Edward S. Downs, served with him in Company F. After the war he married Emily A. Evarts at Westville on May 1, 1867. Albert was an active member of Admiral Foote Post, No. 35, Grand Army of the Republic.
