John Walter Wessel, who went by "Walter" in his everyday life, was a quiet, unassuming man who married once, later in life, to Alvena Hodges (daughter of Ralph and Treasa (Schaffner) Hodges.) They had no children.

The Wessel family owned and operated a restaurant in Quincy's earliest days. Ads for it can be found in the Quincy library online newspaper archive.

John Walter Wessel ran a grain elevator in Loraine Illinois from 1933 - 1960.

The 1940 census finds father and son Wessel family living in Lorraine, Illinois. John Wessel their father was 68. Older sons Walter (John Walter Wessel here named) and Roy were in the grain elevator business. Sister Anna also lived in the household along with her husband Clyde Collins, who owned a restaurant. One wonders if perhaps Clyde had bought the old family restaurant, but that is not as yet known.

Alvena Ruth Hodges became the bride of "Walter" Wessel, 22 November 1942, in Quincy Illinois.

John Walter Wessel served in World War One, although as yet no further information is known. The photo on this page depicts him around that time.

His memberships included: Quincy Lodge 296 A. F. and A. M., Quincy Consistory, and Quincy High Twelve Club. He belonged to Grace Methodist Church. He was a founding member of the Adams County Fair Board, and once served as its treasurer.

Walter and Alvena Wessel enjoyed the company of family. They hosted a well thought of and liked Christmas Eve party at their home each year. Among the family's memories are of the buffet consisting of ready made ham and butter sandwiches, oyster stew, and other treats; and the display of Christmas cards next to the "Coca Cola Santa Claus" doll. There was always a toy for each child attending.

Walter Wessel was survived by his widow Alvena for many years.
