George T. Read died last Thursday, Apr. 10, 1924, in Bangor, where he had been for the past year. He had been in failing health for some time caused originally by hardening of the arteries. Mr. Read was a grandson of Judge Nathan Read, who came here from Danvers, Mass., in 1805 and at that time bought several lots on what is now Northport Avenue. A part of this land is still in the Read family. The deceased also inherited some of the mechanical ingenuity of his grandfather, who invented several patents. George T. Read was born in Belfast, Oct. 19, 1846, the son of Charles E. and Rosina (Blanchard) Read. After attending the city schools he spent a year, when only 16, as quartermaster in the Civil War. He learned the machinist trade in Providence, R. I., and later, went to Gloucester, Mass. Dec 23, 1870, he married Miss Helen Stanwood of Gloucester. In 1871 they moved to Belfast, where for many years Mr. Read conducted a machine shop on Main Street. Later he was associated with his son, C. E. Read, in what is now the Norton Garage on High Street, but was obliged to give up work on account of failing health. Mr. Read was a highly respected citizen and an honorable man in every particular. Three sons and one daughter survive, Arthur W. Read of Portland, Clarence E. Read of Lawrence, Mass., Norman A. Read and Louise J., wife of Charles E. Brown of Belfast. One brother and three sisters also survive, Willis H. Read and Mrs. Mary J. Lowe of Belfast, the latter spending the winter in Winthrop, Mass., Mrs. Edward K. Burnham of Gloucester, Mass., and Mrs. Rosetta R Syphers of Seattle, Wash. The funeral was held at the home of his son Norman on Court Street Sunday at 3:30 p. m., with Rev. William F. Skerrye of the First Church Federated officiating. The internment will be in Grove Cemetery. The bearers were M. R. Knowlton, Ralph H. Howes, George I. and Austin W. Keating.
