Bruce bought the Adams homestead from the John Adams heirs about 1930 (it is now owned by his grandson Sam Adams Jr) and farmed it while operating a grocery store in Mountain City then moved to Johnson City, Tennessee. He later came back to Mountain City and he and brother Edgar went in partnership in a Grocery store in Mountain City.
In 1942 he sold his interest in the grocery store to brother Edgar and went to farming. But in 1945 the Grocery business called him back so he stayed in the grocery business until 1961 when he sold out to his son Paul. His children Mary Ruth and Lena Kate both died in infancy.
