Sanford Barraclough was born in 1908 near Rio in Ostego Township, Columbia County, Wisconsin and was the son of John and Carolina (Peterson) Barraclough. He had been an employee of the Milwaukee Road Company and by Nelson's Home Bakery in Rockford prior to his service. He joined the Portage National Guard in 1940 and was part of the 32nd Division's mobilization of the Wisconsin and Michigan National Guards in October 1940. His unit trained in the US and was shipped to Australia in the spring of 1942, prior to being moved to New Guinea in October 1942.

PFC Sanford Barraclough was killed in action in New Guinea on December 3, 1942 during the Battle of Buna-Gona, the first Rio soldier to die in WW II. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His body was returned to Wisconsin in 1948.

Sanford was survived by his father John and two brothers, A. Kaspar of Rio and Ervin (Earl) of Rockford.
