PFC Sanford Barraclough was killed in action in New Guinea on December 3, 1942 during the Battle of Buna-Gona, the first Rio soldier to die in WW II. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His body was returned to Wisconsin in 1948.
Sanford was survived by his father John and two brothers, A. Kaspar of Rio and Ervin (Earl) of Rockford.
