Charles Cleo McCollum

Services for Mr. Charles Cleo McCollum, age 89, will be Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at the South Jackson Church of Christ with Brother Ray Pack and Brother Ed Ballard officiating. Burial will follow in Ridgecrest Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, May 25th from 5-8 p.m. and Saturday 10-11 a.m. at the South Jackson Church of Christ.

Mr. McCollum, a retired Vocational Agriculture Teacher, died Thursday morning at the Jackson Madison County General Hospital.

He was the son of the late Charlie and Mae Moore McCollum and was born in Reagan, TN the 2nd of 5 children. He graduated from Sardis High School in 1941, then moved to Memphis, TN and worked for the Railway Express. He was drafted in the US Army in January 1943 to fight in WWII as part of the 2nd Reconnaissance Troop in the 2nd Infantry Division. He landed on Omaha Beach, France as part of the D-day invasion. He fought across France, Belgium and into Germany. He was wounded at Elesborne Ridge, Germany in December 1944.

In 1949, Mr. McCollum earned his Bachelor's degree in Agriculture from UTK. Later he earned a Masters and 45 above from Memphis State University. His first job was in Savannah, TN - teaching Veterans farm training skills. In 1950 he began teaching with the Madison County School System. He taught Agriculture ½ day at Beech Bluff School and ½ day at Pinson School. July 1956 Mr. McCollum began teaching at the then new South Side High School. He taught Agriculture at South Side for 33 years, retiring in December 1988 at the age of 66 with a total of 42 years teaching experience.

Mr. McCollum was a member of the Bemis Church of Christ and a deacon for over 30 years. He was also a lifetime member of the Future Farmers of America and inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010.

Mr. McCollum was married to the late Arlene Presley McCollum of Sardis and later to the late Mattie Sue Segerson McCollum of Jacks Creek. He is survived by one son, Tony Presley McCollum, Jackson; one daughter, Jill Gallemore (Jerry), Milan; four sisters, Mae Nell Walker, Camden; Iva Hopper, Jackson; Bertie Diggs (Wayne), Pinson; Joy Bingham, Sardis; five granddaughters, Angela Petty (Ron), Henderson; Jana Gallemore, Memphis; Kandi McCollum, Jackson; Tiffany Overton (Wes), Jackson; Juliann Poyner (Brandon) Bartlett; two great grandsons, Bryce and Cade Petty, Henderson.
