Boutell became a wheelsman on the tug "Wave" in 1865 and was promoted to mate the following year. In 1867 was appointed master of the steamer "Ajax" a side-wheel tug. In 1868 took command of the "Runnels" a side-wheel steamer in passenger trade between Bay City and Oscoda. In 1869, along with Capt. William Mitchell formed Mitchell & Boutell providing general towing service of such things as rafts and logs. The tug service, expanded to lake barges as well as an impressive fleet of tugs. The firm dissolved in 1887 with Boutell assuming the tugs and raft towing business. Boutell founded the Marine Iron Works in 1892. In 1897 he purchased the Coal Business of C.H. Clump to be operated by his sons Frederick E. and William H., under the name of Boutell Brothers & Co. In 1897 he organized the Excelsior Foundry Company, which made heavy casting used in Wheeler's shipyard. Boutells’ other business included Commercial Bank of Bay City, in which he was a stockholder and director; president of the Boutell Transportation Company; president of the Hampton Transportation Company; president of the Marine Iron Company; president of the Excelsior Iron Company; president of the Saginaw Bay Towing Company; and vice-president of the Business Men's Association. He was also in real estate in and around Bay City. Some vessels owned and sailed by Boutell;
