Doris M. Chappell
February 2, 1921 - May 22, 2012

Doris was born in February 2, 1921, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada the fifth child of Bliss Chappell and Ethel Winifred Brownell; the youngest of the family and the third daughter. Bliss and Ethel Chappell loaded the family and all of their belongings into a Ford touring car and left Canada in 1924 coming to Pico Rivera, California. The family eventually settled in Whittier. Doris was a resident of Los Angeles County for 88 years.

Doris began her education at the old William Penn Elementary School and graduated from Whittier High School in 1940. She attended Pasadena City College and the Whittier Business College before she embarked on a series of career adventures.

She worked at the National Bank of Whittier and the Rose Hills Cemetery before she and sister; Margaret opened the first Chappell's Cafe in La Habra in 1944. They closed the La Habra location and opened the Whittier location of the Chappell's Coffee Shop in 1946 and operated until Margaret married in 1951.

Doris worked for the Galeton School District, Rothschild Oil Company, and then in the accounting department of the Whittier City School District offices for 21 years. In 1976 she took a hiatus and reopened the Chappell Coffee Shop in Uptown Whittier with Margaret. They stayed in business for a little more than a year before deciding it was just too much work. Doris then went to work for the Whittier Union High School District and retired in 1983.

Doris volunteered for the Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital Auxiliary for 26 years. She logged hundreds of hours working in the Auxiliary's "Forget Me Not" gift shop located in the hospital, as well as the thrift store that was located in Uptown Whittier. Doris had many wonderful friends over the years that shared her passion for volunteerism and community service.

Doris will be buried at Rose Hills Memorial Park. A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 31, 2012, 11:00 a.m. at Rose Hills Memorial Park, 3888 Workman Mill Rd., Whittier, California, 90601, Hillcrest Lawn.
