Gently they go, the beautiful, the tender, the kind - I know But I do not approve. And I am not resigned!

Charles Donald "Jake" Ament, 71, passed away Wednesday evening, May 23, 2012, at home after a six year battle with cancer. He fought this illness with much courage, a positive attitude, great sense of humor, and strength. He inspired many people with how he accepted this disease.

He married Earla (McVey) Ament, his wife of 51 years, on March 5, 1961.

Born in New Danville, on September 5, 1940, he was the son of the late Earl and Lillian Messer Ament Haas.

Jake retired in 2002 after 36 years of service from the Safe Harbor Water Power Corporation where he worked as an engineering assistant. A United States Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, he was honorably discharged in 1964. He was a graduate of Penn Manor High School class of 1958. He was a member of the Millersville VFW Post 7294, Lancaster American Legion Post 34, and coached Safe Harbor Little League Baseball. He traveled the world and visited all 50 states. His love of the outdoors lasted a lifetime. He enjoyed boating, fishing, and camping along the Susquehanna River. He backpacked parts of the Appalachian Trail, the Mason Dixon Trail, and the Colorado Hiking Trail, which he helped maintain for many years. He volunteered his time at the Supia Indian Reservation in Arizona. He also volunteered and attended the chapel at the Mennonite Home for the past several years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Rose, wife of Ronald Barley of Lancaster; and brother, Earl R. Ament and his wife, Belinda of Washington Boro. He will be missed by his numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held from the Columbia United Methodist Church, Fifth and Walnut Sts., Columbia, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dorcas Martzell officiating.
